Creativity & Innovation

"The world is full of answers. We need to ask the right questions." ---Isaac Newton

  • Would fresh, unusual ideas be helpful to your organization?
  • Is your organization chained to procedures and policies that worked in the past but are of no value now?
  • Is your marketing and advertising boring, old, and unfocused? Is it having little motivational impact on current, past, and future customers?
  • Are operations running worse that they were at this time last year?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, your team is ready for a perspective tune-up. Creativity and innovation are vital for all businesses to keep up in an ever-changing marketplace. Creativity can be defined as "the discovering or making of something that is new". Innovation is "the implementation of the new".

The purpose of Reverse Logic is to bring new approaches to solving problems and exploiting opportunities by being resourceful and innovative. Many organizations rely heavily on the creativity of their staff, becoming stale and less efficient. Help your employees become more creative with 'thinking outside the box' principles. When their involvement is taken as a personal challenge, your staff will feel invested in the anticipated outcome of a project or idea. Originality abounds when there is no stifling of ideas and a good relationship exists between all team members. Why not show your staff a new way to think and improve work processes by using the 'Thinking Outside The Box With Reverse Logic' method?

The Four Forms of Reverse Logic

Opposite Meaning Reverse Logic

The human mind is mandated by predisposition to view problems and opportunities from a singular perspective. People live in a world of opposed equalities. Right/left, up/down, sweet/sour, good/evil, friend/foe, heavy/light, black/white and north/south are examples of opposites. Reverse Logic provides a pathway that forces perspective from a different or opposite viewpoint. When solving problems, we tend to look for solutions from only one half of the opposed equality pair. In its simplest form, Reverse Logic adds additional perspectives to problems and opportunities by forcing the mind to consider the opposite dimension.

Switch to the opposite of the meaning of a declarative statement stated as a challenge or opportunity. For example: Our company needs to decrease shipping overhead (perceived need). The opposite or reverse is to look at the problem this way: We need to increase shipping overhead. (In other words, how could we increase the overhead to reduce it?) Your mind will work with whatever command you give it. To gain greater perspective and more choices, create solutions from the opposite angle.

Phrase Reverse Logic

Brainstorming is the most widely used method to solve problems. It utilizes the synergy of a group—providing connections, insights, and experiences applied to a defined problem. New ideas always emerge from a brainstorming session.

In traditional problem solving - ideas are generated in a linear fashion. Ideas from past experiences applied to a current situation. Most of the solutions move along a theme of improvement from a fixed experience based focus. Reverse Logic will provide new options that originate from a new point of view (random discovery).

When using the phrase reverse logic method, each word in the phrase is reversed in meaning. This puts a whole different meaning on the phase and creates new ideas and perspectives. In the example—Our company needs to decrease shipping overhead, each word would be reversed and the new ideas recorded. The first reversal would be—Your company needs to decrease shipping. Each word reversed creates a whole new phrase with a different intent revealing new meaning and ideas.

Anti-Strategies

Work on creating problems instead of trying to solve problems. Make a long list of a defined subject for making things worse. For example: Twenty-five ways to increase overhead and ruin the company. The list will contain items (problems) that are already in existence in the enterprise or organization. After the list is generated, have others identify the challenges that are in force now. The value of anti-strategies is that it identifies employee's perceptions of what is wrong.

Another Person's Perspective

The opposite of looking at a problem from your perspective is to look at it from the prospective of others. To do this, you must really get to know one or two people very well so you have a good idea how they think.

It has been said that reading 3-5 books about a specific person will make you an expert regarding their thinking patterns. When we need help from that person, all we do is ask ourselves "What would he/she do in this situation?" Let's say you have read three books about Abe Lincoln. You have a challenge concerning dealing with a chronically late employee. You would ask yourself "What would Abe Lincoln do in this situation?" Wait, be patient, and a thought will come forward. Sometimes it will give you insight into the situation.

Success Stories

Success Story #1

The Situation A company that sells cell service wanted their employees to use only their cell service. It makes sense to use only your own products.
Opposite Opportunity After much discussion, we decided for half of the sales reps to use the services of all the competitors. The other half used only their companies cell service.
Results The sales team that used the services of the competitors sold 40% more than the team that used only the companies cell service.
Conclusion The opposite of the perceived need was the best option.

Success Story #2
The Situation A business consultant wanted to start a peer review group and generate revenue by charging a monthly fee.
Opposite Opportunity In lieu of charging a monthly membership fee, the consultant decided to generate compensation in the form of referrals.
Results The referrals have generated thousands of dollars in consulting and training contracts for the business consultant.
Conclusion The perceived need of charging a monetary fee wasn't the best option. Having members contribute referrals accomplished the monetary goal.

Success Story #3
The Situation A company tried to solve a shipping problem with the thought-storming method of thinking.
Opposite Opportunity They applied reverse logic principles and discovered a not- so-obvious solution.
Results A change in shipping policies and procedures saved the company money and improved service to their customers.
Conclusion A company employee attended a "Thinking Outside the Box–An Exercise in Reverse Logic" workshop and applied the principles learned to solve the shipping problem.

Success Story #4
The Situation A city was checking for vulnerability to terrorism.
Opposite Opportunity By applying reverse logic techniques, they discovered an easily accomplished method that could kill thousands of people at an upcoming event.
Results The city became aware of the situation and will have the opportunity to insert a defense mechanism that could avoid a terrorist attack.
Conclusion A tragedy was possibly circumvented by discovering a dreaded scenario that hadn't been considered until attending the workshop.
