Article: 5 Stages For Successful Training
back to Free Articles
One shot training has very little value and in most cases is a waste
of time in terms of implementing new skills or attitudes. The marketplace
seems to be infatuated with the one-shot heavy-dose-of-information type
training events. In my experience, they simply do not get the results
they promise. The stages listed below will get results and the desired
change.
Planning:
Get feedback from employees on the training subject being
contemplated. Include their ideas in the overall plan. The training
committee agrees on objectives, philosophies, and techniques and a written
plan
of action is generated. A letter of engagement is accepted between
the trainer and the hosting institution. Quality in planning results
in quality
results.
Employee Buy-in:
The trainer should meet each employee and start the
process of the employees accepting the program and the trainer. It
is best to have the owner or a top official of the company take the
trainer
around and introduce him and say “This is Jim Rooney of People
Smart Tools. He is the one we mentioned in the newsletter who is going
to help us understand our customer’s perceptions of the company.” Employee
buy-in is very important as it tells the employees that they are significant
and have a say so in the training process.
Delivery:
The trainer will have better results if he interacts with
the audience. Demonstrations, small group activities, video and other
visuals assist in making the content more easily grasped. The trainer
must be upbeat, positive and humorous.
Class Time:
Limit training to two hour intervals, which is about as
long as the participant can keep up their interest. Give assignments
to be practiced between sessions and get feedback at the beginning
of the next session. Give certificates of attendance at the end of the
final
session.
Follow-up:
Schedule a follow-up and review session a month later. Make
sure managers and leaders continue to do the things they learned. The
employees are looking for verification that these new changes are company
policy.
Invest your time, money, and attitude in this system. It will provide
you with the results, changes and benefits you desire.
